今夜から僕は、北の大地へ旅に出る。
かつてはアイヌモシリと呼ばれ、
幕末には旧幕臣の榎本武揚が蝦夷共和国を開国し、
男たちの果てない夢の舞台にもなったあの場所…。
そう、北海道に行くのだ。
とは言ってもただの旅行ではない。
メインイベントは昨年11月に亡くなったおばあちゃんの納骨。
冬は霊園が雪で閉鎖されてるため、
雪解けを待ってゴールデンウィークを外して、
今の季節をチョイスした。
そしてなんと移動手段は車。
「飛行機で行けばいいじゃん(呆)」と多くの人に言われたけど、
ある意味こんな贅沢な旅はもう今しかできないような気がして。
おばあちゃんのお骨と両親と犬を乗せて、
常磐道→磐越道→東北道と、
僕のグロリアが闇を切り裂くライトニングボルトと化す！
そして極めつけは新型フェリーの「ナッチャン」。
変な名前だけど青森と函館を2時間で結ぶ優れもの。
とういうわけで、家から函館までの合計所要時間は
およそ8時間強といったところか。
霊園は札幌だけど、滞在場所はというと
百万ドルの夜景が自慢のイカす街函館。
この街はおばあちゃんとが痴呆になるまでの住まいがあった場所であり、
大切な思い出がたくさん眠る場所。
夏休みに行くと必ず着物で気合を入れて
空港まで迎えに来てくれたおばあちゃん。
僕が3歳くらいのころ野良犬に絡まれたとき、
腰が引けつつも必死で追い払ってくれたおばあちゃん。
イカソーメンとホッケのすり身を
夏休み中毎日作ってくれたおばあちゃん。
冬に備えて薪ストーブの薪割りを一緒にやったっけなぁ。
海に行くとき必ずおにぎりを握ってくれたおばあちゃん。
僕が何度も「三角のおにぎり作ってよぅ！」って言っても、
包みを開くといつも出てくるのは丸いおにぎり。
明治生まれだから芯の強い人だったんだな。
近所のおじいちゃんたちからモテモテだったおばあちゃん。
おばあちゃんの住んでた家はもう取り壊されてしまったみたいだけど、
おばあちゃんの彼氏(故人)の家はまだあるだろうか…。
函館に着いたらまずはおばあちゃんの家の跡地に行ってみよう。
そして近くの啄木小公園に言って石川啄木の銅像にあいさつ。
その後しばらく大森浜から海を眺めてたそがれて。
「松楽」のラーメン屋がつぶれてなければ塩ラーメン食べたいし、
蕎麦処「まる吉」のなかよしセットも食べたい。
「こいけ」のカツカレーも絶対食べよう。
余裕があったら駅前の「ブルボン亭」のあんかけ焼きそばも…。
よく海水浴に行った七重浜もどうなったか見てみたい。
親父にウニを盗ってもらったあの場所も、
今は変わってしまったのかな。
まぁ、もし風景が変わってしまっていても、
その場所に行けば変わらない思い出が
僕を待っていてくれるはずだから悲しくはないだろう。
行きたい場所がいっぱいあって、食べたいものも山ほどある。
会いたい人もいる。
ほんの5日間の滞在で、そのうち一日は札幌に行かないといけないから
どこまで達成できるかわからないけど、
おばあちゃん、僕、がんばる！
